About the Artwork:
PERSIST is a powerful original watercolour and acrylic artwork created by Sophie-Claire Violette and Tyler Kennedy Stent, created as part of a body of work that has been a long time in the making called Challenge of the Lioness. Within this body of work, anthropologist Sophie-Claire curated an incredible group of strong, powerful wahine as both the main focus of Tyler’s visual art, while also recording their stories and messages with multi-disciplinary artist, Jeanne Reynolds.
PERSIST was created of Palestinian/New Zealander Rana Hamida who was recently involved in the brave humanitarian aid mission - The Global Sumud Flotilla - along with her NZ comrades Youssef Sammour and Sammuel Leason before they were all abducted and detained in Israel. Additionally, 462 members of The Sumud Flotilla have been illegally intercepted and counting.
“Rana is not a headline. She is a person, an artist, a singer, and a steward of Palestinian culture.” During her detainment, the portrait was completed, and the typography for the painting was contextually developed.
Tyler and Sophie-Claire have decided that now is an important time to release this artwork - as an Auction - with all proceeds going towards Rana, Youssef and Samuel’s reintegration following their arrival home on the 10th October and their continued activism.
